Tuesdays and Thursdays we take some time to reflect on the previous day’s post with the help of some visual inspiration.
The butterfly is one of the most beautiful and delicate of God’s creations. Its stunning colors, delicate frame, and graceful flight capture our attention. Nevertheless, we often forget the prior condition of this creature. How amazing it is that something this delightful was previously an unsightly caterpillar. What once had been unappealing and offensive is now elegant and charming. What brings about this dramatic change? A time of transformation.
We know this transformation in the life of a butterfly is known as metamorphosis, but we often overlook the most important element of the process. The most remarkable changes actually take place not as a result of activity, but in the midst of utter stillness. All exertion and effort stops as the caterpillar becomes nearly motionless and completely at rest. One would think that such a standstill could produce no change, but more is taking place during this time of rest and inactivity than can be imagined.
Likewise, it might appear as though little change could possibly take place in our lives without some struggle and labor on our part. The effortless ease of simply renewing our mind to the realities of our spirit and setting our minds there might seem far from productive. Nevertheless, as Paul stated in Romans 12:2, transformation actually comes from the relative ease of merely renewing our minds. So, if you find yourself thinking that it just seems too easy, that there must be something required of you, remember the butterfly. Take your rest, cease from your labors and rest in what God has accomplished for you and in you. You will be amazed at the transformation as you rest and witness your own…metamorphosis!
