II Corinthians 3 ~  How To See the Unseen

In Friday’s post, Beyond Beholding, we talked about the meaning of beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord…seeing the glory of the Lord in us.  But, how do we know what that glory looks like?  Our spirit man, where that glory resides, is an unseen dimension of us.  If beholding the glory of the Lord in us is vital to our transformation, as II Corinthians 3 says, then we need to know how to see the unseen.

It might surprise you, but the way to see your spirit man is actually not that different from the way you see your natural man  It is true that your inner man cannot be seen with the natural eye, but neither can your outer man.  Think about it.  Have you ever actually seen your face?  You have never seen the color of your eyes, the curve of your cheekbones, or even the shape of your nose.  How do you know what you look like?  You go to a mirror.  And although you have never actually seen your own face, you trust the image you see in that mirror.

In the same way, we cannot see our spirit.  However, there is a mirror we can go to in order to see what our inner man looks like.  The Word of God is that mirror.  We must go to the Word to find out what we look like.  Here’s the tricky part.  As much as we believe the image we see in a natural mirror, we must believe the image we see in God’s Word.  As boldly as you declare your eye color without ever having seen your eyes, likewise boldly describe yourself according to what you see in God’s Word.  Trust the image in the mirror.  You’ll find some startling things as you gaze at your likeness.  You might even discover that you look much different than you believed.
