Romans 5 ~ The Curse Reversed
The hopeless plight of fallen man, born with an unchangeable sin nature appeared to leave all of us in a perpetual state of doing our best and getting forgiveness for the rest. The endless failure, frustration, and guilt of this condition was what I had lived with and I’d heard echoed by the Apostle Paul in Romans 7.
Yes, Adam’s sin had brought about man’s greatest loss, changing our image and likeness from being like God to one of sin, iniquity, and shame. Adam’s disobedience had changed everything, sentencing mankind to forever be born sinners.
…through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners…
Sin was not just something we did…it was who we were. It was our nature, our very identity. We were born this way. However…. that was not the end of the story.
Although born in this hopeless state, God, because of His boundless love for man, made a way for us to be born again.
In sending His Son to bear the death penalty for man’s sin, God made the impossible possible. Yes, another has come. Adam’s sin had brought devastating change, but through this One, change had come again. What Adam had done, Jesus has undone. What had been a curse was now reversed.
This One, Jesus, has not just taken care of the old, He has brought something new. What I had been striving to accomplish for years He had made attainable. I was finally getting closer to realizing what He had spoken to me long before from Isaiah 54. I had only been able to relate with the one spoken of as, “O afflicted one, storm tossed and not comforted…”, but hadn’t dared to believe the adjoining promise that declared, “…In righteousness you will be established”. I had realized much since then. I had seen what wasn’t working and had come to understand the hopeless nature of my dilemma. Thankfully, now I was beginning to see not just the devastating part of the story,
For as through the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners….
but was catching a glorious glimpse of the other half of the story….
even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous. Romans 5:19
It had been a long time coming, but because of what Jesus had changed, my change was at hand.
